Unlike most casino card games, Baccarat allows participants to choose which side of the table to bet on—the Player hand or the Banker hand. The object is to correctly forecast which hand will contain cards that come closest to nine points in total. Successful bets pay even money (1:1) and Ties push. It could not be much easier.
Until the advent of the Internet and online gaming, Baccarat could only be enjoyed at multi-player tables in real casinos. Many of those offered stakes so high that they excluded all but the wealthiest patrons. In the late 20th century, Mini Baccarat became the version of choice among rank and file players, and it was that form of the game that first began appearing on web sites as a single-player option in the 1990s.
Playtech, for example, has long offered a very simple online platform with realistic graphics and sound. There are options for setting betting amounts from one to three hundred units. Play is initiated by staking a wager on either the Player or the Banker to win. Tie bets are also allowed, paying 9-to-1.
Both the Player and Banker positions receive two cards, dealt face up. The sum of the numbers on the cards determines the value of the hand, with Aces counting as one point, the 2~9 worth face value, and all tens and “face” cards (King, Queen, Jack) counted as zero.
If the total of the two cards is less than ten, that is the hand’s value, such as 3-5 is worth eight points or A-K is worth one point. If the total is more than ten, only the last digit is counted as the hand’s value, such as 5-9 is worth four points (not fourteen) and 3-8 is worth one point (not eleven). Hands that total exactly ten are worth zero, known as a baccarat, from which the name of the game was derived.
Both the Player and the Banker may have the opportunity to draw one additional card in an attempt to improve the value of their hands. In most online versions of the game, whether to draw or not is determined by standard Baccarat Rules automatically, so there are really no choices for the online player to make, other than which hand to bet on and how much to wager.
Should both hands have the same value, the result is called “egalite” or a Tie. When a Tie occurs, the Player and Banker bets are returned as a “push” and the Tie bets win. Tie bets lose, however, whenever the final result of the hand is not a draw.
The House edge is incorporated in the game’s payouts. Successful wagers on the Player hand pay even money, with a House margin of 1.36%. Winning bets on the Banker hand also pay even money, but are levied a 5% commission, equivalent to a net House edge of 1.17%. Although Ties pay 9-to-1, true odds are closer to 19-to-2, again providing the House with its advantage.
Playtech has since added a multi-player mode that allows private games to be created for friends to gather together or for players to join tables where games are already in progress. A chat function permits communication with other player.
Most recently, live dealer Baccarat games have become available at many online casinos. A real Dealer in a remote location can be seen via real-time video feeds. Player wager and chat just as they would in a land-based casino. Bet365, William Hill, 888 Live, Unibet, Blue Square and VC live are just a few of the major web sites providing this service.
