Launched in 2004, EuroMillions is a transnational lottery, initially created through cooperation of lottery organisers in France, Spain and the United Kingdom. Since then, the game has been joined by official lottery operators representing Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal and Switzerland.

EuroMillions conducts its drawings every Tuesday and Friday in Paris at 19:45 GMT (20:45 CET). The game features 50 numbers, of which five are selected for each game plus two “Lucky Star” numbers drawn from a pool of just 11 numbers. Depending on how many of the player’s selections match the ones drawn at random, payouts are made ranging from €4 up to a progressive jackpot worth millions for a successful €2 wager.

Payouts are made according to percentages of the prize pool available on a on a pari-mutuel basis, not as fixed odds. The exact value of the prize depends on how many tickets have been sold and how many entries share the winning numbers.

At least two matching Main numbers are required to win a cash payout. The overall probably of winning any prize at all is 1:13. The following table gives an indication of the likely amounts to be won for each of 13 tiers of success:

Jackpots begin at €15 million. If the jackpot is not won in a drawing, the unclaimed Common Prize Fund is carried forward and added to the next jackpot. In fact, such rollovers happen regularly, allowing the total to grow beyond eight figures. Also, occasional Super Draws are scheduled, with the jackpot starting at €100 million.

EuroMillions also has a special “Booster Fund” whereby unallocated cash from the Common Prize Fund is used to boost the jackpot level, often in weeks when the jackpot must be topped up to provide the guaranteed minimum €15 million.

A standard EuroMillions ticket costs €2 or £2 per line played. There is also a “Plus” option available in Ireland and Portugal; for a €3 ticket it offers an additional jackpot worth €500,000 for matching five out of five numbers, plus two more prize tiers if players match either three or four numbers, worth €20 and €2,000, respectively.

In the U.K., an account to play EuroMillions can be set up through the National Lottery. The advantage is that players can pre-book wagers—as many as 52 weeks at a time. The minimum purchase is three lines and the maximum is 10 lines per draw. After you ticket purchase online, a confirmation email is sent out and scanned tickets are available to view within 24 hours. Notification emails are sent out to the winners of all prize tiers.

Another way to wager on EuroMillions indirectly is to participate in Euro Lotto betting. It is offered by many bookmakers as a fixed odds alternative paying from 8X to 25,000X the wager for one to five numbers correctly selected.
