Palma de Mallorca, also known simply as “Palma,” is the major city and port of the island of Majorca (Mallorca) as well as the capital city of Spain’s autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. It is situated on Mallorca’s south coast, facing the Bay of Palma. According to the most recent census, the city’s population recently topped 401,000, compared to the island’s entire urban area with 517,285 residents in 2009.

Palma’s history stretches back to Roman times and a settlement established around 123 AD. The enclave survived Viking incursions, Byzantine influence, Islamic rule, Moorish invasions, Christian occupation, the Spanish inquisition and numerous wars to be finally conquered by the overwhelming force of tourism. Its airport, Son Sant Joan, today serves more than 22 million passengers each year. The city’s Marivent Palace became the summer holiday venue for Prince Juan Carlos I of Spain and the royal family, and vacationers by the millions began flocking to Palma for its sunshine, beaches, attractive historic quarter, port full of fishing boats, surrounding pine forests and palm trees.

Dominating the gambling scene in Palma de Mallorca is Merkur Gaming, one of Europe’s leading suppliers of video lottery terminals, AWP and casino machines. Merkur is a division of the Gauselmann Group headquartered in East Westphalia, Germany, where Paul Gauselmann started out by refurbishing used U.S. jukeboxes in 1957. Twenty years later, the family-owned company was manufacturing its own slot machines.

In 2012, Merkur formed a joint venture in Mallorca with Dosniha Gaming, a Palma-based recreational specialist with more than 30 years of experience in gaming clubs and machine fabrication. Dosniha began manufacturing their own exclusive gaming machines in 2000, and the joint venture ensures that the two companies are poised to take a leading role in Spanish gaming, not just in Palma but throughout the entire country.

Today, no fewer than nine casinos bearing the Merkur brand dot the streets of Palma, putting the opportunity for gaming entertainment within easy reach of every Majorcan and visitor. The Merkur Embajada Azar on Calle de la Maquinaria is representative of the properties managed by the joint venture. It is open Sunday through Thursday from 11am to 3am and on Fridays and Saturdays from 11am till 5am, offering gaming machines and a busy Roulette table for patrons, plus live music or DJ guests, a restaurant, a terrace bar, Cabaret-Lounge, nightly specials and 100 underground parking spaces. Membership in the Ambassadors Club earns perks for VIP players, too.

Down by the port on the promenade of Palma, opposite the Cappuccino, is the Merkur Maritimo. Its salon features slots manufactured by the Gauselmann Group along with a large electronic Roulette area and a bar for refreshments. Open Sunday through Thursday from 11am to 3am and on Fridays and Saturdays from 11am till 5am, the Merkur Maritimo is a highly active aspect of nightlife near the water’s edge.

Two properties, the Merkur Tropicana on Calle de Torcuato Luca de Tena and the Merkur Victoria on Avenida Alejandro Rosello, occupy the west central section of Palma de Mallorca. Both facilities are open from 9am till 3am daily, with emphasis on gaming machines, music, bar service and non-stop action. They are joined by the Merkur Son Gotleu on Calle Indalecio Prieto, named after a popular neighborhood of Palma and seen as a pioneer on the island for its revolutionary design and services.

Merkur-Dosniha’s other four locations are open from 9am to 1am. On the east side of the city, they include the Merkur Fortuna and the Merkur Riviera on Avenida Nacional, as well as the Merkur Malibu on Avenida de Bartolome Riutort. On the north side, there’s the Merkur Monte Carlo on Avenida Gabriel Alomar, too.
