The Middle Eastern folk tale of Aladdin, his magical lamp and its resident genie that brings the lad wealth, was incorporated into “The Book of One Thousand and One Nights” (Arabian Nights) in the early 18th century. For over 300 years, the story has captured imaginations around the globe through books and on film, and now, thanks to software developer Electracade, “Aladdin’s Treasure” is available online as a Hi-Lo arcade game at casino web sites such as Bet365.
As the game opens, a race board is revealed, with steps leading to each of four “Shuffle Stops” clockwise around the perimeter of a colourful cloth rectangle for 18 steps in all. The starting point is in the upper left corner of the display. Surrounding the race board are the buildings of a Middle Eastern village, palm trees and a perfectly clear sky at sunset, showing starts coming out, a full moon, and the magic lamp and game logo in the centre. The smiling genie sits in the lower right hand corner, a huge dagger is stuck in the sand on the left side of the screen, and gold flows out of a fallen urn in the foreground.
The “Enter Stake” controls literally “fly” onto the screen upon a white carpet. Clicking on the up/down arrows allows the wager to be set anywhere between €1 and €25. After the desired amount has been selected, clicking on the carpet’s “Play Game” icon will start the game. Then, a second carpet flies in to replace the first, offering the option to shuffle the starting number appearing in a green jewel on the hilt of the dagger.
The object of the game is to correctly guess whether the next number to appear at random in the jewel will be higher or lower than the current number. Available numbers range from 1 to 20. Each correct forecast earns a cash prize, as indicated above and below the jewel for “Hi Pays” and “Lo Pays.” A correct prediction also moves a gold coin game token one step along the race board clockwise en route to greater rewards.
The player may shuffle up to three times, seeking to get a favourable starting number. If the first two shuffles are not accepted, the third number to appear will be the starting number by default. Otherwise, clicking on the carpet’s “Continue” button will send the flying carpet on its way and activate the Hi/Lo controls on the dagger. Click one or the other to indicate the desired outcome and watch as the numbers randomise before stopping on the final result.
If the prediction is wrong, the entire dagger will turn black and a glaring cloud of black smoke with flaming red eyes will appear grinning at the centre of the screen. The words “You Lose” will appear over the losing number and the genie’s smile will turn into a look of dismay. A new flying carpet will whisk onto the screen, offering the opportunity to adjust the stake and play again.
However, if the forecast is correct, the coin token will advance one step along the race board, he genie will continue smiling and the player may either gather the amount won by clicking the orange-coloured “Collect” gem on the urn or play on by making a new Hi/Lo forecast. This process continues until the token is one step away from the Shuffle stop at the corner of the race board. Then, a camel will appear in the middle of the display, holding a scroll that reads, “Next play includes a BONUS of 5%.” If the player correctly identifies the value of the next number, Hi or Lo, the genie will laugh and congratulate the player on winning the bonus. A new flying carper will appear, offering up to three more shuffle opportunities before continuing.
The player may continue to predict outcomes and move the token around the race board, collecting bonuses in each corner, which get progressively higher—10%, 15% and 20%. It is possible to bank winnings at any time, but a single incorrect forecast negates all progress and loses all cash prizes collected to that point. As an incentive to move on, when the two far corners of the board are reached, a Bank Bonus is awarded. This permits a portion of the hard earned treasure to be tucked away safely before continuing on the journey. Use the +/- toggles that appear to select how much money to bank.
