Just a week ahead of the 2012 London Olympics, Playtech announced the release of its new “Wild Games” slot with an amateur sports theme. The 5-reel, 25-payline game features a variety of wild animals competing for medals in such challenges as swimming, gymnastics, and track & field events. What’s more, there are four different bonuses available to make the competition especially exciting.
The amount bet per line of Wild Games slots ranges from €0.20 to €20.00, making for a maximum possible wager of €500. Basic symbols on the reels include the standard cards, Nines through Aces, plus the Basketball and Football symbols, all of which require at least three matches on an active payline to win from 5 to 500 times the line bet. Winning combinations of 2, 3, 4 or 5 of the athletes—Hippo, Cheetah or Bulldog—pay out 5X, 50X, 500X or 1000X, respectively.
Bronze, Silver and Gold medals also appear on all five reels as scatter bonuses. When three or more of the same coloured medal are displayed, the player is prompted to select one of them for a special cash prize. The amount of the prize varies according the colour of the medal and the number of medals triggering the bonus. The amount awarded will be a multiplier of the total wager, from 2X to 100X.
The Trophy symbol is wild on all reels and substitutes for any symbol except the Bronze, Silver or Gold medals. For 2, 3, 4 or 5 Trophies aligned on an active payline, the payout is 5X, 100X, 800X or 3000X, respectively.
Additionally, three different stacked athlete symbols are located on the middle reel. If all three positions on the reel fill with the same athlete, a Bonus Round is initiated. Three Bulldogs will trigger the Freestyle Swim Bonus; three Cheetahs activate the 100M Dash Bonus; and three Hippos launch the Balance Beam Bonus.
In the Freestyle Swim Bonus, three Bulldogs wearing red, blue and yellow swim caps appear ready to race the length of the pool. The player selects one, and depending on whether the pick finishes first, second or third, a medal is won. Next, eight free spins begin. Anytime the medal appears, additional free games are awarded: two free spins for Bronze, three for Silver and four for Gold.
In the 100M Dash Bonus, three Cheetahs wearing red, blue and yellow uniforms appear at the starting line for a race. The player selects one, and depending on whether the pick finishes first, second or third, a medal is won. In the eight free games that follow, Bronze medal becomes an Extra Wild; the Silver medal becomes an Extra Wild and clones one additional wild randomly on the same reel; and the Gold medal becomes an expanding Extra Wild, filling the entire reel.
In the Balance Beam Bonus, the player must choose one of three balance beam routines for the Hippo to perform. Judges score the selected routine and award a Free Games multiplier that is the average of there scores, between 6X and 10X. Eight free spins then follow. In all of the bonus games, there are no stacked symbols on the middle reel and the free spins cannot be retriggered.
The animated graphics and audio tracks for Wild Games are excellent, and the level of interactivity in the bonus games is high. Huge payouts are possible, especially during the free spins with the expanding Extra Wild in the 100M Dash Bonus, where all five reels could potentially turn wild. Perhaps the one missing feature on Wild Games is an Autoplay option, which would eliminate the need to constantly be clicking on the “Spin” or “Bet Max” buttons.
