Between the 15th and 17th centuries, the conquistadors of the Spanish and Portuguese empires liberated the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim control and sailed beyond Europe to conquer new territories and open trade routes. One of the most adventurous such soldiers was Hernán Cortés de Monroy y Pizarro of Spain, whose expeditions to mainland Mexico in the early 16th century caused the fall of the Aztec Empire.

Cortés had heard tales of huge stockpiles of gold, hoarded by Cuauhtémoc, the Aztec ruler, in the city-state of Tenochtitlan. In 1520, the Spanish conquistador and his forces laid siege to the capital, and when Cuauhtémoc was captured a year later, torture revealed some of the booty but nowhere near the vast stores of wealth that Cortés had sought. The location of the great treasure remained a mystery.

Now, however, thanks to the software developers at Gtech G2, players at online casinos like Bet365 can try their hand at locating real riches with “Aztec Gold – Pyramid Climb,” an arcade-style game based upon the legends of Cuauhtémoc and Cortés. The game display features a ten-level pyramid made of golden steps embedded with gemstones and hidden within a secluded bamboo grove. The game of Aztec Gold – Pyramid Climb begins by selecting a Stake to wager. This is accomplished by using the up/down arrows at the lower left corner of screen. Eerie background sounds play as the 12 blocks making up the lowest level of the pyramid light up sequentially from left to right and then right to left, gradually slowing down until coming to rest upon one block that remains lit. However, if the player clicks on the green “Continue” button to the left of the Cashpot, the blocks on the second level will light up sequentially, again slowing until just one block is lit. If the player survives this level, the option to Continue or Collect will be offered once again and repeated until a Loss occurs, Collect is chosen or the tenth level is successfully completed.

In addition to accumulating winnings level by level, the player also collects blue or pink gemstones that adorn random blocks. Collection occurs whenever such a block is the last one lit on a level. A “Gem Bonus” paytable appears on the right side of the display, showing the value of sets—from 3X to 1500X for catching 5~8 blue gems and 3X or 100X for collecting 3 or 4 pink ones.
