The television comedy game known as “Blankety Blank” first appeared in Great Britain in 1978. It was based upon an Australian game show named “Blankety Blanks” that in aired 1977~79. During eleven years as a hit on the BBC, Blankety Blank was hosted by Terry Wogan and then by Les Dawson. It featured a celebrity panel of regular members, who included Kenny Everett, Lorraine Chase, Gareth Hunt, Gary Davies and Cheryl Baker. A revival on BBC in 1997~99 was followed by a stint on ITV in 2001~02.
In each version, the format was basically the same. Two contestants competed head-to-head, answering fill-in-the-blank questions and trying to match the answers given by as many of the six celebrity panelists as possible. Comedic, double entendre and gag answers kept the pace lively and fun—an atmosphere that the slot game version of Blankety Blank by OpenBet Technologies attempts to replicate for online casinos.
Blankety Blank features a 5-reel, 25-payline format and comes with a special bonus feature. To begin the game, the number of active paylines from 1 to 25 must be specified by using the up/down arrows below the first reel next to the “Lines” indicator. Alternatively, the line numbers that flank the first and fifth reels can be clicked on to choose a number of lines.
Next, the amount of the line bet must be set from €0.02 to €20.00, again using up/down arrows in the lower left corner of the screen. Although there is no “Bet Max” button, if the maximum is selected for all 25 lines, the total wager is €500. The full amount wagered can be seen in the “Stake” indicator below the second reel.
The basic reel symbols on Blankety Blank resemble those used on classic slots—Single Bar, Double Bar, Triple Bar and the three Sevens in Yellow, Red and Blue—as well as a Gift Basket. These symbols pay line multipliers from 5X to 200X whenever three or more are matched on an active payline. Higher awards are paid for catching two or more Game Markers or “Wogan’s Wand,” from 2X to 1000X. The Blankety Blank Logo is wild, substituting for any of the above symbols and tripling the payline value. Catching 2, 3, 4 or 5 Logos on an active line from left to right pays 10X, 100X, 1000X or 10000X, respectively.
Five other symbols appear on the reels—the letters, B, L, A, N and K on reels one, two, three, four and five, respectively. Whenever all five letters appear in any of the reel positions, the Blankety Blank Feature is triggered. A secondary bonus window is revealed, where six panelists are shown above a question card. There are five words to choose from on the left to fill in the blank within the question. Each of the panelists giving the same answer out of the five that is chosen awards five free slot spins, up to a maximum of 30 free spins in all.
Next, the screen reverts back to the slot game and the free spins begin automatically. The B-L-A-N-K letters are removed from the reels, so the feature cannot be retriggered. Bonus cash accumulates until all the free spins have been completed, and then another bonus called “Supermatch” is initiated. Three of the six panelists will reveal their answers to a fill-in-the-blank phrase. The player must select the one that seems to have given the best answer, then the order of the answers will be shown and the player’s bonus winnings from the free games round will be multiplied by 2X, 3X or 5X, depending on the ranking of the answer selected.
Blankety Blank also has an Auto Spin feature located below the fifth reel. Using the up/down arrows, from 1 to 50 automated spins may be set. Pressing “Stop” will end the Auto Spins at any time.
