The Crack the Safe screen features a huge burglar-proof safe with a rotating combination lock, a “Bonus Dial” and a “Nudge” handle. In the foreground is a safecracking device with a green liquid crystal display (LCD) and sensor wires coloured red and blue attached to the face of the safe. On the right side of the screen is the “Payout Ladder” made up of eight locked amounts in ascending order from bottom to top.
The “Stake” indicator appears on the LCD, with up/down arrows to its right. Using the arrows, it is possible to select a Stake of €0.50, €1, €2, €3, €4, €5, €10, €20 or €25. Also on the LCD is the flashing “Play” button, along wit the instructions to “Select your stake and press play.” As the amount of the Stake is moved up and down, so do the values of the locked amounts on the Payout Ladder increase and decrease.
Clicking on Play sets the game of Crack the Safe in motion. A message appears on the LCD above five empty boxes, reading “5 left to unlock” and the Stake amount. Additional instructions print out below the five boxes: “Select higher or lower on the dial above … 5 correct in a row unlocks guaranteed win amount.”
The digital counter in the centre of the combination lock reads “9” and the arrow on its dial also points to the 9 position. Since there is no number higher than 9 on the dial, the player has no choice but to click on the “Lower” arrow below the digital counter. The arrow on the dial will rotate clockwise until it comes to rest on a new value, 0~8, which will be displayed in the digital counter. The first empty box on the LCD will fill with an “unlocked” symbol and the first rung on the Payout Ladder will glow green.
Next, the player must decide whether the next number to appear will be Higher or Lower than the current one. The selection is made by clicking on the corresponding arrow above or below the digital counter. If the choice is correct, the second empty box on the LCD will fill with an unlocked symbol and the second rung on the ladder will glow green.
This process continues until an incorrect forecast is made, in which case the game ends and the Stake is lost, or else five correct predictions are made, which will unlock the first payout amount on the ladder. Additional payouts are unlocked for every five consecutive forecasts made correctly. Once a payout amount has been unlocked, it cannot be lost, so the object is to climb as high on the ladder as possible, securing payouts all the way to the very top.
To add a bit of extra excitement to the game, the Bonus Dial will activate randomly at any time during the game. The player must then click on the green flashing “Click Here” button at the centre of the dial. This will cause the dial’s indicator to land on one of four possible bonuses that can help the player win on future forecasts.
The “9 out of 9” Bonus immediately moves the combination lock arrow to the 9 position so that the next spin must result in a Lower number. The “Free Spin” Bonus allows the player to win on the very next spin, no matter what result comes up. The “Extra Life” Bonus allows the player to continue to play after a loss occurs. And the “Nudge” Bonus activates the Nudge handle, which can be used to move the combination lock arrow one position up or down before making a forecast. Note that any Nudge received may be saved and played when needed, and Nudges may even be accumulated, as indicated in the “Nudges Left” counter on the handle.
