They are the product of software specialist Next Gen Gaming, who also make games for Aristocrat, known primarily for land-based casino slots, and such branded games as the cult slot 300 Shields and its infamous 300x multiplier.
As a result, online players may occasionally come across versions of Dolphin Reef that have a very different look and feel from the Playtech format they’ve become accustomed to. At most Playtech casinos, this is a five-reel, 20-payline game, but there is also a Next Gen format with 25 paylines. In both versions the payouts levels and bonus features are the exactly the same, with the exception of the Gamble Feature, which exists only on Playtech.
Matching three or more card symbols, Nines through Aces, on an active payline will yield a multiplier of the line bet from 5X to 250X. Higher rewards can be achieved by matching two or more symbols for Starfish, Seahorses, Sea Turtles or Anemone Fish—payouts of from 2X to 5,000X.
Credit denominations can be varied from €0.01 to €5 by using the “Change Credit Value” pop-up menu below the first reel. Select from 1 to 20 paylines and wager 1 to 10 credits per line. It starts with five free spins that cannot be retriggered, which would be a rather lowly bonus indeed if not for the added attraction. The Dolphins expand and fill all six positions on reels two and four for the balance of the free spins. That means lots of opportunities to gain four or five matches multiple times on each free spin.
One of the truly fun parts of the Dolphin Reef Bonus is watching the animation. A group of three dolphins actually “leap” over the third reel, right to left and left to right, between the water-filled second and fourth reels. There are also plenty of chittering sounds as the Dolphin symbols do their “wild thing.”
One other bonus aspect of the Dolphin Reef slots game is Playtech’s Gamble Feature. Following each win, the player has the option to guess a card colour, red or black for doubling up the winnings.
