Go To bet365The success of Playtech’s first Marvel Hero slot game, Iron Man, coupled with the popularity of Paramount’s 2010 sequel to the original movie version of the legendary comic book character, made the release of Iron Man 2 inevitable. Early in 2011, the new video slot version made its debut at more than 150 Internet casinos amid much fanfare.
Those already familiar with the Hollywood production knew exactly what to expect, and they were certainly not disappointed. There on the five reels of the new game were the illustrated versions of the real actors who appeared in the film: Robert Downey Jr. as billionaire playboy industrialist Tony “Iron Man” Stark, Scarlet Johansson as superspy Natasha “Black Widow” Romanoff and Mickey Rourke as the twisted evil genius Ivan “Whiplash” Vanko.
What nobody anticipated was how different the Iron Man 2 slot was from its predecessor. The “stacked” symbols of the original were cloned into multiple “double frame” characters—two versions of the steely superhero in full armour and four adversarial “war machines” with metal cloaks and weapons of mass destruction of their own. Only the Stark, Romanoff and Vanko characters have single frames, along with the wild Eagle Symbol and Iron Man 2 Logo, which triggers the Scatter Bonus.
Gone were the traditional (some might say “old fashioned”) card symbols, Nine through Ace. Gone, too, was a modern innovation, the animated bonus stage, along with the expanding “wild.” Instead, emphasis was placed on free spins, with ten awarded for three or more scatter symbols, plus increasing multipliers for all line wins and a special “Extra Wild” symbol fixed smack in the middle of the third reel for as long as the free spins continue. Additional free spins, however, could not be retriggered.
Another big departure from the Iron Man prototype was the expansion of the game format to a whopping 50 paylines. With credit denominations ranging from €0.01 to €5, Iron Man 2 slots accept wagers of 1 to 10 credits per line on any number of paylines. The maximum bet is 500 credits or €2,500—one of the richest Playtech games ever offered.
The credit value can easily be changed by using the pop-up menu beneath the first reel. To play, click “Spin.” Winnings appear in the “Win” counter below the fifth reel. The current balance is shown in the lower left corner of the screen. Auto Start can be enabled for up to 99 repeat bets.
Iron Man 2 slots online are connected to the Marvel Multi-Level Mystery Progressive Jackpot with its four tiers—Power, Extra Power, Super Power and Ultimate Power. The tiers start at €50, €500, €5,000 and €100,000, respectively. These are paid completely at random and may occur any time during play. Payouts as high as €500,000 have been won in the past.
Among line payouts, the highest is 3,000X. It is multiplied times the total amount bet and occurs when with five matching Eagle Symbols appear on an active payline. Other line payouts range from 1X to 1,000X. Scatter bonuses of 1X, 3X, 10X, or 100X the total bet are paid out when 2, 3, 4, or 5 Iron Man 2 Logos appear.
Despite the lack of an animated bonus game mode, there is some interesting animation in within the character symbols whenever a winning combination occurs. The lightening-like graphics in the free spins mode is exciting to watch as the multiplier increases automatically, and gold coins fly up from the bottom of the screen to celebrate any huge payouts.
The audio effects are noteworthy, too, from the clanking sound of the scatter symbol falling into place to the alarm that sounds whenever five-in-a-row is scored. The electrical “hum” of the reels can be a bit annoying, but it is replaced frequently with suspenseful or triumphant riffs of music as the tension mounts or a win occurs.
