Of all the superstars of Thoroughbred racing, the Italian jockey known as “Frankie” Dettori is certainly one of the best known and most recognisable. He was born Lefranco Dettori in Milan in 1970 and apprenticed in Great Britain with trainer Luca Cumani at Newmarket from the age of fifteen. He got his first taste of victory a year later in Turin and then won his first British race in 1987. Three years after that, Dettori became the first teenager since Lester Piggott to ride 100 winners in a single season.
In the years that followed, the plucky 5’4’’ jockey won six of the seven major U.K. flat race titles available, from three first-place finishes at the 1,000 Guineas and five Ascot Gold Cups to five triumphs in the St. Leger and a trio of successes in the Oaks. After two decades of guiding winners to the finish post, the only British Classic Race that had eluded Dettori was the Epsom Derby, an event he finally mastered in 2007 on his fifteenth attempt.
An honorary Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) was bestowed on Dettori in 2000. In 2004, with the assistance of renowned chef Marco Pierre White, he opened a restaurant called “Frankie’s Bar and Grill” in Putney, London. Even more notoriety accrued to the racer when his face became the symbol of “Jockey” yoghurt in 2007, promoting a product which is now popular across Europe, and especially so in France.
It should have come as little surprise, then, when software developer Playtech decided to use the much loved Italian rider as the centrepiece of a horseracing themed slot game. Called “Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven” slot, the name is a reference to the jockey’s completion of the seven major U.K. horse races by winning the Derby.
Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven is a five-reel, 25-line game. Winning combinations include Tens thru Aces, Horseshoes, Finish Posts, Trophies and two different Race Photos of the jockey, one mounted and one celebrating with his hands above his head. The line payout multipliers range from 10X to 200X for three or more matched symbols on an active payline.
Three other symbols have special values in the game. Frankie’s Profile is wild, substituting for all other symbols except the special-value ones. Catching five Profile Wilds on an active payline pays a whopping 7,777 times the line bet, while 2, 3 or 4 Wilds award 5X, 400X or 1,000X, respectively.
A special-value Racecourse symbol appears on reels one and five. When it shows up on both reels, the “Magic Seven Bonus” is activated. Replacing the slot mode is an oval track to pick segments from. They reveal cash prizes and trophies that increase the win multiplier while launching a video clip of one of Dettori’s big wins. Bonus play continues until the “Collect” trophy is chosen.
The Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven Logo is the game’s scatter symbol. It pays 250 times the total wager when five such symbols appear, and 1X, 5X or 25X for 2, 3 or 4 symbols showing. Three or more Scattered Logos initiate the “Free Games Race.” The normal slot game is suspected and a grass racing surface appears. The player chooses one of three horses to win the competition, rather like an arcade game, paying 10, 15 or 35 free spins for finishing third, second or first, respectively.
During the free spins mode, more Wilds and Scatter symbols are added to the reels. However, free games cannot be re-triggered and the Magic Seven Bonus is deactivated in this mode.
Credit denominations for Frankie Dettori’s Magic Seven slots range from €0.01 to €2. The value of each credit can be changed by using the pop-up menu under the first reel. Select from 1 to 25 paylines and bet anywhere from 1 to 10 credits per line. The biggest bet possible is 250 total credits per play or €500 (Bet Max). To start play, click “Spin.” Winnings appear in the “Win” counter beneath the fifth reel, and the current balance appears in Cashier area at the lower left corner of the screen. Using Autoplay enables repeat betting for up to 99 spins.
One other challenging aspect of this game is its “Gamble” feature. After each win, the player is given the option to Double, Double Half or Collect the winnings. If Double or Half Double is selected, the player must choose one of four cards to beat the Dealer’s hidden card to win. This doubling can continue until Collect is chosen or the wager loses, whichever comes first.
