In February 2004, Playtech re-released the game with a new format. Now, Gold Rally features 9 positions that function as independent reels, plus 8 paylines with a second screen bonus game. The display window for Gold Rally differs quite a bit from the majority of Playtech’s slot games. Only four controls appear at the bottom of the screen: Paytable, Bet One, Bet Max and Spin. The counter showing remaining Credit, amount of the Win, total amount Bet and the Line Bet appear to the upper right of the reels. The eight paylines are numbers around the reels: 1, 2 and 3 are horizontal, 4 and 5 are diagonal, and 6, 7 and 8 are vertical.
The seven basic symbols that appear on the reels of Gold Rally are the Horseshoe, Pick Axe, Lantern, Six Shooter, Mine Cart, Bag of Gold and the Gold Rally Logo. Payouts start at as few as a single Horseshoe on an active line paying a multiplier of 2X and go all the way up to three Gold Rally Logos worth 500X. Intermediate payouts range from 5X to 200X.
Although there are no Wild symbols in Gold Rally slot, two special symbols can be seen on the reels—the Scales scatter symbol and the Dynamite bonus. The second screen bonus round game is triggered only when Dynamite symbols appear simultaneously in all four corners of the reels. Upon activation of the bonus, a map appears showing seven red X marks. The player selects one of the Xs to reveal a cash prize. If the amount won is small, another pick from the map may be offered, too.
Whenever five or more Scales scatter symbols appear on the reels in any position, a payout is made. The total wager is multiplied by 5X, 10X, 50X or 200X for displays of 5, 6, 7 or 8 Scales scatter symbols, respectively. Scatter awards are independent from payline awards and they are added to any payline wins. Catching all nine Scales scatter symbols awards the progressive jackpot when the maximum bet has been made.
Because the top prize can only be won with a wager of €16 per spin, the Gold Rally slot is recommended only for players with budgets suited to high stakes gambling. Smaller payouts may help replenish the bankroll, but the losses can mount up quickly after relatively few spins. Note, too, that Gold Rally is available only in the Real Money mode.
