Based upon a Japanese TV game show called “Brain Wall” (or “Human Tetris”), the U.K. version entitled “Hole in the Wall” first aired on BBC One in 2008. The weekly programme featured celebrity players who had to contort themselves in order to fit through holes of varying shapes cut into a large polystyrene wall moving towards them as they stood in front of a swimming pool. Two teams would compete for £10,000 in prize money to be donated to a charity of their choosing.
A slot game version of the show was released in 2010 by software developer Electracade. It can now be played online at 888.com, PaddyPower, Bet365, BetVictor and other major gaming web sites in both “For Fun” and “Real Play” modes. The “Hole in the Wall” format is a standard 5-reel, 20-payline layout with two special bonus features.
The Hole in the Wall motif is primarily red, white and blue illustrations on a black backdrop. There are basic card symbols, Jacks through Aces, which pay line multipliers from 5X to 80X whenever three or more matches appear on an active payline. Greater rewards are paid for catching three or more symbols for Forward, Red Player, Blue Player, Red Team or Blue Team., from 15X up to 500X.
The highest ranking symbol on the reels is the “Clear” icon. It pays line multipliers of 40X, 200X or 1000X when 3, 4 or 5 such symbols appear from left to right on a payline. There is also a Wild symbol that substitutes for any icon except the “Replay” and “Hole in the Wall Bonus” scatters. Aligning 3, 4 or 5 Wilds is worth 10X, 100X or 1000X times the total wager made.
Anytime 3, 4 or 5 of the Replay scatters appear on the reels in any position, a total stake multiplier of 1X, 3X or 25X is paid, respectively. The Replay symbols will spin in place and a large “Free Spin” announcement will flash across the reels as glass seems to shatter and the game awards one free spin. Although a single spin may not seem like much of a prize, it can be retriggered and the random Replay symbols do come up frequently.
Catching 2, 3, 4 or 5 Hole in the Wall Bonus scatters in any position on any of the reels pays a total stake multiplier of 2X, 5X, 25X or 100X, respectively. The Blue Helmeted player icon jumps through a hole in each symbol and points his fingers in a triumphant pose. When three or more of the Bonus scatters are displayed simultaneously, the Bonus game is triggered.
The feature begins with the Bonus icons transforming into Red Wall symbols. The player is invited to click on one to reveal the starting cash for the Bonus round. Next, a secondary screen appears and the player must select one of three teammates to compete in three leaps through the moving wall. Each time the selected player completes a successful leap, a multiplier is added to the Bonus starting cash. The Bonus ends after three attempts to jump through the Hole in the Wall, whether they are successful or not.
To begin the game, the player must select an amount to wager per line. This can be accomplished by using the up/down indicators next to the “Stake/Line” indicator at the lower left corner of the display. Available values run from a minimum of €0.02 to a limit of €20.00. Similarly, the number of lines to be played can be set by using the up/down indicators next to the “Lines” indicator beneath the first and second reels. Alternatively, clicking on the line number identifiers that flank the first and fifth reels will also set the number of lines to be played.
There is no “Bet Max” button on Hole in the Wall, but wagering the full €20 per line on all 20 lines yields a maximum stake of €400. Whatever amount is wagered will show in the “Total Stake” window below the second reel. There is a “Total Paid” window under reel four. Indicators for Stake and Paid also appear beneath the “Balance” counter at the top right of the screen.
Autoplay can be activated by clicking on the corresponding button in the lower right corner. There are options for 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 spins. The same button is used to stop the Autoplay function.
