No matter how much innovation occurs in slot games, players always take an interest in the classics. Recognising that, NetEnt software engineers returned to the roots of slot machine creation, resurrecting not only the symbols that have entertained players for a century but also the simple, three-reel look that never grows old. The result is Lucky 8 Line, a slot game now appearing at Bet365, BetVictor and other major casinos online.
However, as much as the surface similarities reflect the past, there are definitely some 21st century touches to be found in Lucky 8 Line. Although it looks at first glance to have a 3-reel, 8-payline configuration, this game actually features independent reels for each of nine positions putting it in a class with games like Playtech’s “Vacation Station,” “Chinese Kitchen” and the progressive favourite known as “Gold Rally.”
The grid of reels appears on what looks like a realistic slot console in the middle of a private club. There are lounge chairs, tables and tropical plants in the background, artistic sculptures, a thick grey carpet and indirect lighting for a very posh look indeed. Just like a real slot console, the Lucky 8 Line has a marquee at the top, with colourful neon lights outlining the game’s title and the embedded “Win” and “Bet” indicators. Counters for “Coins” and “Coin Value” appear to the right of the reels and there is a control panel below.
To set the coin denomination prior to play, click on either the €0.10 or €0.20 coins at the bottom right of the screen. In the middle of the control panel beneath the middle column of reels, the “Single Line” button can be clicked to select how ever many of the eight available paylines are desired—three vertical, three horizontal and two diagonal. Continue clicking to add more coins per line, up to a total of eight coins each or 64 units maximum. That makes the betting limit €12.80 when playing with €0.20 coins.
Alternatively, clicking on “All Lines” will apply coins to all eight lines as many times as desired, else “Bet Max” can be used to wager the full 64 credits and set the reels in motion. Other buttons on the control panel include the “Spin” button on the right to activate the reels and the “Clear Bets” button under the first reel to set the number of lines and amount wagered back to zero. The “Paytable” button on the left enable access to a second display window that shows all of the ways to win—30 different winning combinations in total.
The Cherries are the least of the symbols, with line multipliers of 2X, 5X or 10X when 1, 2 or 3 of them appear in order on an active payline. All other symbols require three matches aligned, starting with the Oranges at 10X and Plums at 14X. Catching three Bells in a row is worth 18X, while three Watermelons pay 20X. There are also the familiar Bar symbols. Getting three of the Single Bar pays 30X, the Double Bar is worth 50X and the Triple Bar yields 100X. A combination of three mixed Bars in any order wins 10X.
A secondary chart for “Paytable Specials” can be seen on the right side of the display. This chart applies whenever all nine reels are filled with the same type of symbol, starting with 9 Fruit symbols of any type worth 15X. A mix of any 9 Bars is valued at 50X, as are 9 Oranges. The other symbols pay from 100X to 500X when they fill the reels.
There is also one more symbol, the highest ranking of them all—the Red Seven. It is worth 200X when three come up in order. The Red Seven also serves as the game’s “Scatter” symbol, paying multipliers of the total wager at rates of 2X, 5X, 20X or 50X when 2, 3, 4 or 5 of them appear anywhere on the reels. For catching 6, 7, 8 or 9 Red Sevens, the payout is 100X, 200X, 400X or 1000X, respectively.
Lucky 8 Line has additional control options at the bottom left of the screen. Autoplay can be used to set up from 10 to 1,000 automatic spins. The “Tool” icon opens the “Game Setting” where sound effects and speed of play can be modified. Note also that as the reels are spinning, clicking on them will slow and stop them.
