Video slots have changed greatly over the past several years. One of the key innovations has been the introduction of second screen bonus features, which has added an entirely new dimension to the concept of slots beyond the spinning reels. One of the pioneers in developing new online slot technology has been Betsoft Gaming. Their Slots-3 Series of 3D games has upgraded the graphics and audio components, while pioneering a wide range of non-reel bonuses.
In the video slot game called “Once Upon a Time,” the five reels and 30 paylines have been given a theme of Arthurian fantasy. The opening screen shows a green countryside with a large tree in the centre and a castle in the background. A narrator provides the back story, upon which the game’s features have been based.
“Once upon a time, in a land far away, there was a 3D slot game like never before seen: where sneaky goblins ran amok, stealing every valuable in sight; where a brave knight sets off to rescue a beautiful maiden; and where a dangerous, menacing dragon stood in his way. You’re invited to a magical world of fantastic entertainment, when you play Once Upon A Time.”
The next screen shows the game’s reels, which are set within the rock walls of the King’s castle. Most of the key controls are located at the bottom of the screen. Birds chirp and spirited music plays in the background throughout the game unless disabled by the player using the “Sound” on/off toggle above the first reel.
The coin denomination for the game can be adjusted by clicking directly on the “Choose Coin” indicator on the wooden barrel at the lower left corner, from €0.05 to €1.00. Directly below the second and third reels are three tree stumps marked “Bet Per Line,” “Select Lines” and “Spin.” By clicking directly on the stumps, it is possible to set the total Stake from 1 to 5 coins per line on 1~30 paylines up to a maximum of €150. After the Stake has been set, clicking on Spin or on the ox cart marked “Max Bet Spin” will set the reels in motion.
The symbols appearing on Once Upon a Time are taken from medieval legends. They include a Shield, Battleaxe, Catapult, Sword in a Stone and a Feast. These symbols pay line multipliers from 50X to 1250X whenever three or more match up on an active payline from left to right. Higher awards are paid for matching two or more Trumpeter, Stack of Treasure or Princess symbols, from 10X to 2500X.
The Fire Starter (dragon) symbol is wild when it appears in the top position of the third reel. Any time it shows up there, it expands to fill the entire reel and substitutes for any of the above symbols. The third reel will remain frozen as an expanded wild as long as at least one or more Stack of Treasure symbols appear on the other four reels on subsequent spins.
Whenever three Sack of Gold symbols appear anywhere on reels 1, 3 and 5, the “Greedy Goblins Click Me Bonus” is initiated. The player may click on any of the three Click Me symbols to receive a hidden cash prize. Additional Click Me prizes can be selected over and over until a “Collect” symbol appears, thus ending the bonus with all amounts won added to the triggering spin payout.
Catching three or more Goblins on an active payline activates the “Goblin’s Treasure Bonus Round.” Follow the Goblins into the King’s study and help them steal three shiny objects, each of which wins a cash reward. Or catch three or more Tree House symbols on an active payline to launch the “Those Crazy Goblins Free Spins.” Five free spins are awarded to start, with one additional fee spin added each time a Tree House symbol appears during the free spins mode.
Two other special features on Once Upon a Time involve the Knight symbol. Whenever the Knight lines up to the immediate left or right of the Princess symbol, the couple will kiss and award a random number of “How She Loved the Knight” instant credits. Or when three or more Knight symbols align on an active payline, the “save the Princess Bonus Round” is triggered. The player must choose one of four weapons—Hammer, Catapult, Sword or Meat—to help the Knight defeat the Fire Starter and save the princess for a big cash reward.
