Dice games are among the oldest known forms of recreation. Some 10,000 years ago, humans began forming four-sided sheep hucklebones into a crude form of dice called “astragali.” This is where the phrase “throwing bones” came from. About 5,000 years later on, the bones were fashioned into cubes to make them roll more smoothly, and games have been invented ever since, including Playtech’s latest arcade innovation called “Rollercoaster Dice.”
The motif for this game is a theme park, where a devilishly complex configuration of rollercoaster tracks creates a backdrop for fun. Everything about the game design is colourful and exciting, while an upbeat jazzy tune plays constantly to set a fast pace for the dice action ahead. In this case, of course, the dice are virtual, not real, but the ups and downs are just as thrilling.
Play begins by selecting an amount to wager by using the the +/- toggles at the center of the screen. The bet can be set anywhere from €0.10 to €100.00. After the desired amount has been selected, clicking on the red “Play” button will initiate the game. Two dice will show and the player must decide whether the next roll will result in a total higher or lower than the current value. Typically, at least one of the two choices will include the opportunity to win on a roll of the same value as well.
The object is to correctly forecast the outcome, higher or lower, on at least four consecutive occasions in order to receive a payout. There is a “Light Ladder” on the right side of the screen that will display the results of each roll and the amounts to be won by reaching various levels. The first level is worth quadruple the original bet and it takes four correct forecasts in a row to achieve.
Should the player chose mistakenly at any time, the game ends and a new opportunity to play is offered. But if the player should achieve the first level, a prompt will appear, indicating “You have reached a payout level. Do you wish to cash out your current win?” To take the winnings and end the game, click on the red “Cash Out” button, else click on “Keep Playing” to continue toward the next level.
In total, there are four payout levels on the Light Ladder, each worth 4X, 7X, 13X and 30X, respectively. After the first level has been achieved, it only takes two correct selections to reach the next payout level in turn. To reach the very top payout and claim the biggest prize requires 10 correct guesses in a row. At a maximum bet of €100, the jackpot is worth €3,000.
It should be noted that catching totals of two sevens in a row always wins. That’s because the choices offered are “Lower or Same” and “Higher or Same.” When the dice total exceeds seven, the choices will be “Lower” and “Higher or Same.” When the dice total is less than seven, the choices will be “Lower or Same” and “Higher.” Inevitably, there is a bit of strategy involved in making the selection, just as some thought must be give to when/if to cash out as the opportunity arises.
Because of the decision-making aspects of the game, Rollercoaster Dice does not offer many control options. The ones that are available can be found in the “Tools” pull-down menu under “Options,” such as “Game Settings,” “Audio Settings” and “General Settings.” This is where the player can disable the game sounds, background sounds or dealer voices. It is also possible to adjust the game speed for normal play or fast play.
