He was created by artist Jack Kirby for a subordinate role in the popular Fantastic Four series, but later gained a following of fans and his own series by 1987. In the back story that later became the plot for a 2007 Twentieth Century Fox movie, “Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” the character is revealed as Norrin Radd, a young astronomer of the planet Zenn-La. To save his home world from destruction, he made a bargain with a planet-eating entity called Galactus to serve as the light-speed-traveling herald of destruction for other worlds. The Fantastic Four superheroes help him rediscover his nobility of spirit and break away from Galactus to save the Earth.
Currently, rumors abound of a full-length “Silver Surfer” film in production, supposedly scheduled for release in 2014. That may mean the only Silver Surfer slots available online for the next couple of years will be those developed by Cryptologic in 2006. The five-reel, nine-payline game is part of the company’s exclusive Marvel Comic Series.
The Silver Surfer slots feature credit denominations range from €0.05 to €5, with wagering of one credit per line up to a maximum bet of €45. The value of the credits can be changed by clicking on the up-down arrows beside the Bet window under the fifth reel. Start the game by clicking “Spin.” Winnings are displayed in the “Paid” section at the bottom of the screen, along with the current balance showing to the left and the Total Bet to the right. Using the Autoplay feature enables effortless repetition of bets.
Among the winning combinations of symbols on the reels are matches of three or more Red and Blue Energy Blasts, Energy Barriers, Flaming Comets, Ringed Planets or Earths. Even higher payouts are awarded for lining up Jeweled Gloves, Surfboards, Doctor Doom or Galactus symbols on an active payline. The Silver Surfer is wild on reels two and four, substituting for any symbol except the Logo scatter emblem.
The highest line payout possible is awarded for five consecutive Galactus symbols, worth 3,000 times the line bet. Other payouts range from 5X to 1,000X multipliers. There are also three randomly awarded progressive jackpots—the Marvel Hero Jackpot that starts at €5,000, the Super Hero Jackpot beginning at €500 and the Hero Jackpot from €50. As with all linked Marvel Jackpots, the more one bets the more likely the chances are of hitting one of the three jackpots.
Getting five Logo scatter emblems pays 125 times the total bet, while 4, 3 or 2 Logos award 20X, 5X and 2X, respectively. The “Re-Spin Bonus Feature” on Silver Surfer slots is activated by catching the Silver Surfer on both reels two and four without Galactus appearing on reel three. The regular slots game is then suspended and the Wild icon takes over all three positions on reels two and four, so that every position can complete a winning combination. The Re-Spin Bonus continues until Galactus appears on reel three. The animation of the Silver Surfer character moving in and out of the reels during the Re-Spin Bonus is one of the best parts of this game. It is also refreshing to have no pre-set number of free spins. Galactus might appear on the very first spin or not for a hundred. Oddly enough, the Silver Surfer slot has not manual stop button to override the reels. Once the action begins, the player is simply along for a light-speed ride.
