The online slots developed by Realistic Games Ltd. are noted for their hyper-realistic graphics and audio, and the Japanese-styled “Super Graphics Upside-Down” is certainly representative of their innovation. This 5-reel, 20-payline game has the unique “Real 2 Reel” option that allows playing the game in either “Full Cabinet View” mode, surrounded by other slot machines just like on a real casino floor, or in “Close-up” mode so that only the view of the reels can be seen on the screen.
The Super Graphics Upside-Down game console has an authentic 3-D look. Controls are found on a ledge-like panel below the reels, colourful day-glow Japanese characters frame the console and a tombstone-shaped marquee appears at the top, depicting the game logo and the lucky “Money Cat” with one paw raised in the air to beckon wealth.
The game begins with the player selecting an amount to wager. This is accomplished by using the up/down arrows next to the “Stake per Line” indicator below the third reel. Available wagers range from €0.01 to €10.00. All 20 paylines are automatically played on each spin, so the maximum Total Stake possible is €200.
The basic symbols on the reels are similar to those found on most fruit machines. Catching 3, 4 or 5 matching Lemons, Plums, Grapes or Watermelons from left to right on a payline is worth a line multiplier of 5X, 10X or 20X, respectively. Higher awards are paid for matching “anime” illustrated card symbols, Jacks through Aces, from 10X to 80X. The top prizes are paid for getting 3, 4 or 5 Red Sevens, worth 50X, 100X or 250X, respectively. Super Graphics Upside-Down also has a blue Wild Icon that substitutes for any of the above symbols. Note that the maximum payout during a single game is 5,000 times the Stake per Line value.
Among other control options, the “Info” button on the left end of the console provides access to the game’s Paytable, the “Options” tab above the reels allows the game’s “Sound” to be turned on or off, and the “Real 2 Reel” in the upper right corner of the screen allows the game view to be changed. Next to the “Start” button on the right side of the console is the “Auto” button, which is used to set up from 10 to 500 automated spins. The Auto function also provides for “Fast Reel Spin,” automatic stopping for bonuses or big wins, and continuous uninterrupted play.
Key information such as the amount Bet, Paid and Won are displayed directly below the reels. A message section gives greater details, such as which lines have won and how much they have paid, along with a count of how many Auto spins have been played. Clicking on the coloured numbers that flank reels 1 and 5 will show the paths of the various paylines.
By far the most intriguing aspect of Super Graphics Upside-Down is its Free Spins Bonus Round, which quite literally turns the game upside down. It is triggered whenever three or more Logo Scatters appear anywhere on the reels and begins by awarding Total Stake multipliers of 2X, 40X or 250X for catching 3, 4 or 5 Logo Scatters, respectively.
Next, a small anime lady named Satsuki walks to the middle of the reels and introduces herself in Japanese. Her words are translated into broken English in a text banner that crosses the screen. She explains that the player has one 15 free spins in the game’s “Upside-Down” mode. All five reels retract into the display, flip 180 degrees and then return to the front of the display upside down. All of the paylines remain the same, but they will play in the opposite direction for the free spins.
Each spin must be activated manually by using the Spin button. As the spins progress, Satsuki will comment from time to time in Japanese with such words of encouragement as “Fight!” or “Go! Go!” or “Don’t stopping!” She will also count down the last three free spins—which can be retriggered by catching three or more Logo Scatters again during the upside-down mode. After all free spins have been played, the accumulated winnings will be paid and the reels will flip back to their right-side up state.
