The TV game show known as “The Price Is Right” first aired in the United States in 1956. The programme was revised in 1972 and picked by ITV for a British version in 1984. In the U.K., it was hosted by Leslie Crowther till 1988, by Bruce Forsyth in 1995~2001 and by Joe Pasquale in 2006~2007. For one year, 1989, the show was broadcast on Sky One with Bob Warman as host. Australia and Mexico have had their own versions, too, and the format of all these was essentially the same: contestants would compete to win cash and prizes by guessing the correct pricing of merchandise.
The slot game version of The Price Is Right was developed by NextGen Gaming for access at online casinos like Bet365 and BetVictor. It features a 5-reel, 25-payline format and comes with a variety of special bonus features.
To begin a game, the number of active paylines from 1 to 25 must be specified by using the +/- toggles below the third and fourth reels on either side of the “Lines” indicator. Alternatively, the line numbers that flank the first and fifth reels can be clicked on to select a number of lines. Next, the amount of the line bet must be set from €0.02 to €10.00, again using +/- toggles below the fourth and fifth reels. If the maximum is selected for all 25 lines, the total wager is €250.
The basic reel symbols on The Price Is Right are the standard cards, Nines through Aces. They pay line multipliers from 5X to 150X whenever three or more matches align on an active payline. Luxury prizes, such as the Car and Vacation symbols, are worth 15X to 200X when three or more in a row appear. The “Big Wheel” and “Hostess” symbols pay 2X, 25X, 100X or 2500X when 3, 4 or 5 of a kind display on a payline. The “Host,” who appears only on the middle three reels, is wild and substitutes for any of the above symbols.
When all three of the Host symbols appear in any position on the middle reels, the Mini Game Feature is triggered. The player will get the choice of two bonus rounds—the Secret X Feature or the Cliffhanger Feature. For Secret X, a grid of nine square appears with question marks in the three positions on the center column. One of the question marks hides the Secret X. The player must mark an X in one of the six remaining squares. Then, an item is shown with two possible values. Guessing the correct value earns another X.
This process is repeated, and if the player gets at least one value correct, the center column is unhidden and the Secret X revealed. Like Tic-Tac-Toe, if the Xs form a line of three in a row, a stake multiplier prize of 50X is won. Consolation prizes of 8X or 15X are also available.
In the Cliffhanger Feature, the player receives 8 free spins. Whatever payouts are won can then by multiplied by moving a Hiker up a slope to get as close to the edge without going over. The possible multipliers range from 3X to 7X. If the Hiker falls off the cliff, the multiplier is 2X.
Another special bonus is the Showcase Feature. It is activated whenever all three Price Is Right Logos appear on reels one, two and three in any positions. Seven different gift items will appear on the Showcase Board with a Car at the bottom. The player must place the gift items in order of price from lowest to highest in order to win the maximum total stake multiplier of up to 100X. Consolation prizes of 5X are awarded for each pair of gift items in correct order. In any event, two Logos will pay double the original stake and three are worth 10X.
One other special feature on The Price Is Right slot is its “Big Wheel Bonus.” By wagering on all 25 paylines and adding an extra 10X the current Bet value, the Big Wheel beside reel five will be activated. It spins when the reels do and awards line multiplier from 1X to 5X on every spin. There is also a stop for the Mini Game Feature to be triggered, and on any scatter win, the bet per line is awarded a 25X multiplier.
Other options on The Price Is Right include an “Autospin” function for up to 50 automated spins, a “Turbo” toggle for fast play and a “Quality” selector for graphic resolution at Low, Medium, High or Best. Reel symbols animate when they appear in winning combinations, and the game show’s theme music is part of the audio effects.
