In Norse mythology, Thor is the legendary “God of Thunder”—the son of mighty Odin, brother of troublemaker Loki and a resident of Asgard, the permanent home of the gods. Slinging an incredibly powerful hammer called Mjolnir, he can fly, absorb and project energy, manipulate the weather and shatter just about anything he strikes. In 1962, this mythical being served as the model for a Marvel Comics superhero created by writers Stan Lee and Larry Lieber, with artwork provided by Jack Kirby.

Over the course of several decades, Marvel’s Thor appeared in several ongoing comic book series and limited editions. Since the 1970s, he has been associated with a team of superheroes known as the Avengers, which includes Iron Man, Captain America and the Incredible Hulk, among others. In 2011, Paramount pictures introduced “Thor” as a full-length film, starring Chris Hemsworth. That was followed by a role in the 2012 blockbuster titled “The Avengers.” A sequel, “Thor 2” is scheduled for release in 2013.

In 2005, software developer Cryptologic signed an agreement to come up with a line-up of online slot games based upon the exploits of Marvel comic characters. Thor was among the second group of Marvel Heroes Slots produced, made available in June 2006. The five-reel, nine-payline game is currently still the only Thor-themed slot on the Internet.

Cryptologic’s Thor slots feature credit denominations range from €0.05 to €5, allowing one credit to be bet per line up to a maximum bet of €45. The credit value can be changed by clicking on the up-down arrows next to the Bet window below the fifth reel. Start the game by clicking “Spin.” Winnings can be seen in the “Paid” display at the very bottom of the screen, along with the current Balance on the left and the Total Bet on the right. By using the Autoplay feature, it is possible to effortlessly repeat bets up to 999 times.

Winning combinations of symbols on the reels are obtained by matching three or more Amulets, Bracelets, Tornadoes, Viking Ships, Asgards or Female Warriors. Even higher payouts are awarded for lining up Golden Hand, Mjolnir, Frost Giant or Loki symbols on an active payline. The Thor symbol is wild on all reels, substituting for any symbol except the Logo scatter emblem.

The highest possible line payout is received for five consecutive Thor symbols, worth 4,000 times the line bet. Other payouts range from 5X to 1,000X multipliers. There are also three progressive jackpots awarded at random—the Marvel Hero Jackpot starting at €5,000, the Super Hero Jackpot beginning at €500 and the Hero Jackpot from €50. Just like other linked Marvel Jackpots, the more that is wagered the more likely the odds are of hitting one of the three jackpots.

Catching five Logo scatter emblems pays 100 times the total bet, while 4, 3 or 2 Logos award 20X, 5X and 1X, respectively. The “Re-Spin Bonus Feature” on Thor slots is activated by three or more Logo scatter emblems appearing. The game automatically exits the normal slots mode and ten free spins are awarded, each one with all wins tripled. Obtaining combinations of three or more additional Logo scatter emblems triggers extra free games. There is no limit on the amount free spins possible.

The graphics on Thor slots are animated. The Thor symbol raises his hammer to draw energy fro above, while Mjolnir smashes the Logos when they occur in winning combinations. The audio quality, however, is not up to Cryptologic’s usual high standards—just clunking sounds as reels spin and come to rest, and organ riffs for certain wins instead of dramatic music.
