The fictional character known as “Zorro” was created in 1919 by New York-based pulp fiction writer Johnston McCulley. His name means “fox” in Spanish, and it serves as an alter ego for Don Diego de la Vega, a California nobleman living in the Spanish colonial era. When acting as Zorro, Don Diego conceals his true identity by wearing all black clothing, a mask and a cape. He’s an expert swordsman and equestrian, who defends the local people against tyrannical officials and legions of other villains.

Over the years, Zorro has appeared in various media, from books and comics to movies and several TV series, including a Walt Disney-produced half-hour show from 1957 to 1959 that starred Guy Williams in the title role and animated versions produced in Japan in 1996 and the United States in 1981 and 2002.

More recently, software developer Aristocrat obtained the rights to release “Zorro” as a 5-reel, 25-payline slot game for access at major online casinos such as Bet365. Illustrations are used to represent the characters on the reels, which spin against a Zorro silhouette against a black background with the controls running along the bottom of the screen.

To begin, choose from 1 to 25 “Lines” by using the +/- toggles below the second reel or by clicking on the line numbers that flank the first and fifth reels. The amount of the “Bet” per line may be adjusted by using +/- toggles beneath the third reel. Available denominations range from €0.03 to €5.00, thus making the maximum possible wager €125 per spin. Instead of a “Max Bet” option, separate “Max” buttons are provided for the Lines and Bet per line amounts.

The basic reel symbols on Big Ben are the common card symbols, Tens through Aces. Payouts are made for matching three or more of these symbols for payouts of 3X to 300X. Higher rewards can be gained by matching symbols for the Money Sack, Barrel, Captain Ramon or Lolita Pulido, from 40X to 2000X for three of a kind or more on an active payline.

The wild symbol on all reels is the Zorro icon. He substitutes for all of the above symbols during normal slot play. Catching 2, 3, 4 or 5 of the wild Zorro icons in a winning combination pays 5X, 100X, 500X or 5000X, respectively. There is also a Black Stallion scatter symbol on each of the reels. Whenever 3, 4 or 5 of these appear anywhere on the reels, a payout is made times the total stake of 5X, 20X or 50X, respectively.

The game’s special Zorro Bonus is available only when the feature has been activated by playing all 25 lines and paying an additional 10 times the average line bet using the button at the lower left corner of the display. The Zorro Bonus is triggered by catching the letters Z-O-R-R-O on the five reels in any positions. Then, one of six random bonuses will be awarded: Tornado (cash prize), Gold Coins (cash prize), Wild Z (random wilds and free spins), Barrels (free spins and multipliers) and Magic Door (cash prize icon and free spins).

One other bonus available on Zorro is the Gamble Feature. After each win, the player has the option to guess a card, red or black to double up the winnings, or to pick a suit—hearts, diamonds, spades or clubs—to quadruple the winnings. Choosing correctly allows gambling again and again up to a maximum of five times, otherwise the “Take Win” button can used to collect the payout and return to the slot game mode. To make card selection a bit easier, a history of the suits of past cards drawn provides some useful information.

One other useful aspect of this slot is the Autoplay function. Clicking on the Autoplay button below the first reel will open a menu for selecting from 5 to 500 automatic spins. The game will only pause when the player clicks on “Stop Spin” or the Free Games Feature is activated. Note that the Gamble Feature is disabled during the Autoplay mode.
